Woman pleads innocent to arson in Savoy

URBANA — A Champaign woman is due in court on Sept. 21 after she pleaded innocent to starting a fire at a bus shelter in Savoy in July.

Octavia Sunderland, 18, who listed an address in the 900 block of West Kirby Avenue, pleaded innocent on Thursday to felony arson.

According to a sheriff's office report, police and Savoy firefighters were called to a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus shelter that was on fire at the Indigo Apartments, 117 Sterling Court, at 7:35 p.m. on July 30.

The MTD estimated damage to the shelter at $7,500, according to the report.

Firefighters determined that the fire started when a poster inside the shelter was set on fire.

Lt. Ed Ogle said an MTD bus driver had picked up a few passengers at the stop and overheard one of them say she had tried to put the fire out but couldn't. The driver dropped that passenger off at the Savoy 16. Deputies then found Sunderland at the movie theater.

Nobody pleads innocent. Guilty/Not Guilty
