Atwood home invasion under investigation

ATWOOD — The Piatt County sheriff's office is continuing to investigate a home invasion that happened in that city earlier this week.

Chief Deputy Mark Huckstep said about 2;15 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, deputies were called to a home on South Indiana Street.

The man living there said two men wearing masks and armed with baseball bats forced their way into his house while he was asleep. He heard the door get kicked in and got up to investigate.

The resident then got involved in a physical fight with one of the intruders and was able to get him to the ground. He pulled the man's mask off. He was also able to take the baseball bat away from one of the men.

The victim said he was kicked while he was on the ground.

The man gave sheriff's deputies the name of the person he believed he was fighting but when deputies located that man, he denied being involved and had witnesses who verified what he had told police.

Huckstep said the victim sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
