Urbana bank robbery under investigation

URBANA — Urbana police are looking for a man who held up an Urbana bank Saturday morning.

Sgt. Andy Charles said just before 9:30 a.m., a man walked in the First Financial Bank, 2510 S. Philo Road, and threatened a bank employee by implying that he had a gun. Charles said the employee didn’t see one.

The employee handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the man left on foot. Bank employees weren’t sure which way he went. There were no customers in the bank, Charles said, and no one was hurt.

Charles said some employees weren’t even aware a robbery was happening.

Charles described the robber as a black man, about 6 feet tall, 40 to 50 years old, with a ball cap on. He had on dark sweat pants and a tan Carhart type jacket.

If you have any information, call Urbana police at 384-2320 or Crimestoppers of Champaign County at 217-373-8477.

On June 28, the Heartland Bank at 1812 S. Philo Road a few blocks away was robbed.

There have been seven bank robberies in Champaign this year.
