Second arson in three weeks at Savoy apartments

SAVOY - For the second time in three weeks, someone has intentionally set fire inside a Savoy apartment complex.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Coile said Savoy firefighters were called to the Parkview Apartments, 100 Parkview Lane, just after 10 p.m. Sunday where they found heavy smoke in a first-floor hallway.

Firefighters found that an artificial tree in a hallway had been set afire, which tripped overhead sprinklers that put the fire out. Coile said a firefighter dragged the tree outdoors and firefighters were left to clean up the water and vent the smoke.

Damage was estimated at $5,000 to $10,000.

On Aug. 14, someone set fire to an artificial tree outside an apartment just down the hall from where Sunday's fire was set, Coile said.

Deputies have no suspects. They ask anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at 384-1213 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.
