UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch canceled for East Central Illinois

Update:  1:30 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm watch for East Central Illinois has been canceled.

Original story:

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a portion of East Central Illinois, in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday. The counties included in the watch area are: Coles, Edgar, Moultrie and Shelby.

Hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.  The watch area is approximately along 90 statute miles east and west of a line from 45 miles north of Indianapolis, Indiana, to 40 miles west southwest of Evansville, Indiana.

A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.  People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.  Severe thunderstorms can and do occasionally produce tornadoes.
