BB gun shootings in Champaign lead to arrest
UPDATED 4 p.m. Friday
CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man is due in court on Nov. 6 following his arrest for aggravated battery.
Two men were shot — neither seriously — and one man was arrested with a BB gun on Thursday afternoon in Champaign.
Songan Schneider, 20, who listed an address in the 400 block of East Church Street, C., pleaded innocent on Friday to two counts of aggravated battery.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said police were called mid-afternoon to Fourth and Church streets, where they found one man who had been shot in the upper body by a BB gun. As they were talking with him, officers saw a man in a house nearby holding what appeared to be a rifle.
"It turned out to be a BB gun," and police arrested him, Dunn said.
Police discovered a second man also was shot. One of the two men was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment, but neither wound was life-threatening.
Dunn said Schneider was arrested for aggravated battery and taken to the Champaign County jail, where he is being held on $25,000 bond.
