Wings theater building to be torn down

Rantoul's last connection to Hollywood — the movie theater — will be no more in a couple of weeks.

The Wings Theater building, 133 S. Garrard St., will be demolished.

The theater, which was opened in 1976 or 1977, according to village records, has been closed since February 2000.

Rantoul Village Inspector Dan Culkin said the building is owned by American Multi-Cinema, Kansas City, Mo.

The company has contracted with Franzen Construction Group, Urbana, to demolish the building.

Culkin said the building is in bad shape.

He said an AMC official "talked to one of the (village) staff, and they recognized that the roof did collapse ... and not too far away is an air conditioner unit."

"It is kind of a bad situation," Culkin said.

Formerly owned by the Kerasotes Theatres chain, the two-screen theater was converted into a storage building when it was closed more than a dozen years ago.

For years, area residents have pined for a return of the Wings or construction of another theater. But it was never going to happen at the Wings because Kerasotes — and later AMC — refused to reopen it.

Very sad. I remember taking my children to this theatre quite often when it was a dollar theatre. Good memories. Still holding out hope that we don't lose the Harvest Moon in Gibson City as well.

I just don't know what to think!! So much of my life was spent in this place. My family was often thought to own it but my father just ran it for such a long time. I remember as a kid watching it get built. Just so many memories for me. I have missed this place for years and now it will be gone all together. I just might have to take time off to watch this happen. :...(
