Suicidal teen on overpass taken to hospital

RANTOUL  - A teen-age boy on an interstate overpass was taken to an Urbana hospital for an evaluation after he threatened to harm himself.

Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Curt Apperson said police were able to talk the 17-year-old down from the overpass for I-57 on County Road 2900 N  just south of U.S. 136.

Apperson said sheriff's deputies and Rantoul police responded about 12:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving at least two calls from people passing by who saw the teen on the overpass.

"He made comments about wanting to kill himself. He was taken to Carle for evaluation. He did not harm himself," Apperson said.

The teen told police he was homeless.
