Newman man dies following crash in Douglas County

Updated 7:35 p.m. Wednesday

NEWMAN — An autopsy performed Wednesday in Urbana indicates that a Newman man died from injuries he received when his vehicle rolled over.

Douglas County Coroner Joseph Victor said that Larry Eugene Pitts, 34, of rural Newman, was pronounced dead at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday at the scene of the crash.

Victor said that Mr. Pitts was driving east on County Road 1050 N when his car left the road and hit a utility pole on the north side of the road east of County Roads 1050 N and 2730 E in Newman Township at 6:07 p.m. Tuesday.

“He was ejected when the vehicle rolled over,” Victory said on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. Pitts was the only occupant of the car, according to the report.

Victor said his office was assisted by the Douglas County sheriff’s office, Arrow Ambulance and the Villa Grove and Newman fire departments.

Victor said an autopsy conducted Wednesday at the Champaign County coroner’s office indicated that Mr. Pitts died of injuries related to neck fractures caused by the accident.

The case is under investigation by the Douglas County coroner’s office and sheriff’s office.
