No injuries reported at Rockome Gardens fire

ARTHUR — Investigators from the Illinois state fire marshal's office are expected to spend much of this week investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed two adjacent buildings at Rockome Gardens on Monday night.

Nobody was reported hurt.

Arthur Fire Chief Chris Helton said firefighters were called to the theme park, located southwest of Arcola, at 8:06 p.m. Monday after a man who was headed home heard what sounded like an explosion and glass breaking and called 911.

Arthur firefighters received mutual-aid assistance from the Arcola and Cooks Mills fire departments.

"When we arrived, we saw what looked like two buildings side by side, with one building showing heavy fire coming out from under an overhang," Helton said. "The windows had burned through."

Helton said the two adjacent buildings were used for storage, but they had previously housed a bakery and a candy store. He said firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to any additional buildings at the theme bark.

While firefighters had the fire under control shortly after 9 p.m., Helton said, some of the firefighters remained at the scene until noon Tuesday.

Helton said he considered the two buildings to be a total loss. He estimated total damage at between $150,000 and $175,000.

He said the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Investigators from the state fire marshal's office were at the scene on Tuesday. Helton said they expect to continue their investigation throughout the week.
