Man arrested in Champaign garage

URBANA — A New Orleans man was charged Thursday with residential burglary after allegedly going through a woman's purse in her garage Wednesday.

Rashard Reed, 26, was arrested late Wednesday afternoon by Champaign County sheriff's deputies in the 2200 block of Valleybrook Drive.

A woman reported that about 3:45 p.m., she entered her garage and spotted a man reaching into her vehicle going through her purse. When she asked him what he was doing, he replied that he was selling books and magazines to help children, according to a deputy's report.

He told her he had been there the day before and another woman told him to return Wednesday and she would buy something. After he walked away, the resident called 911.

The deputy's report said the woman identified Reed as the man who was in her garage.

If convicted, Reed faces penalties ranging from four to 15 years in prison.
