Kohl's in Danville still on schedule
DANVILLE — Construction on the North Vermilion Street retail development that includes a Kohl's department store is not being affected by a decision to delay the opening of at least one new Kohl's store next year, according to Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer.
Eisenhauer said officials with Continental Development in Milwaukee, which owns and is developing the retail site at 3707 N. Vermilion St., called him Monday to let him know that Kohl's had made some changes to how many stores it would be opening in the future, but the Danville store, which is currently under construction, would not be affected. The expected opening date for the Danville store is spring 2013.
"We are not impacted. And they are still on target to meet that obligation," said Eisenhauer, who added that Kohl's did push back by at least one year the opening of its planned store in Galesburg.
Kohl's officials would not comment on plans for the opening of any of its new stores.
In a statement emailed to The News-Gazette, company officials said, "Kohl's has an ongoing real estate assessment process. At any given time, Kohl's is reviewing sites in communities nationwide. We do not comment on real estate speculation."
The Danville Kohl's store was originally expected to open this fall, but the timeline was pushed back to next spring when an adjacent development, directly south, which includes a Meijer store, prompted changes in site plans for the Kohl's project that will also include a T.J. Maxx store. Construction at the Danville site at the stoplight intersection of Vermilion Street and Boiling Springs Road began late this past spring.
