Police arrest three for car burglary

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign police arrested three male teens late Friday night for allegedly breaking into a car in an area of campus plagued by vehicle break-ins.

Sgt. Nate Rath said officers responded to a car alarm in a parking garage in the the 500 block of South Third Street about 11:30 p.m. and saw three young men in a car.

They ran but were caught after a brief foot chase, Rath said.

Arrested for burglary to motor vehicle and resisting arrest were Brandon L. Thomas, 18, who listed an address in the 900 block of West Harvard Street, Champaign; Brandon Unzicker, 18, of the 100 block of Sterling Court, Savoy; and a 16-year-old from Tolono.

The group was expected to be formally charged Monday.

On Tuesday, two other men were arrested in the same block by Champaign police for allegedly breaking into a car in a parking garage. Because of the high number of recent vehicle burglaries in that area, Champaign police are stepping up their enforcement efforts.
