Rantoul man charged with predatory criminal sexual assault
URBANA — A Rantoul man has been criminally charged with sexually molesting a girl under the age of 13 on multiple occasions over the last couple of years.
Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said his department has been investigating Steven D. Swofford, 49, for several weeks and arrested him Wednesday when he showed up at the courthouse for an appointment with his probation officer.
Beach said the young girl reported the allegations to her mother, who brought them to the attention of police in late July or early August. Beach said Swofford had reportedly moved to Springfield and it took police some time to make contact with him.
"We've interviewed him and he's denied touching her," Beach said.
The Champaign County state's attorney's office on Thursday filed four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault against Swofford. Each count carries a mandatory prison sentence upon conviction of between six and 60 years. Because different sex acts are alleged — two in December 2010 and two in July — the sentences would have to be served one after the other.
In January 2011, Swofford was sentenced to 30 months of probation after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance.
On Thursday, Judge Rich Klaus set Swofford's bond at $250,000, ordered him to have no contact with the girl named in the charges, and told him to be back in court Nov. 13.
