Stranger in car approaches young girl

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign County sheriff’s deputies are looking into a child’s report that a man approached her in south Champaign on Monday afternoon asking her for help.

Sgt. Dan Coile said the 7-year-old girl was walking home about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Bedford Drive and Park Lane, just southeast of Prospect Avenue and Windsor Road, when a man in a blue four-door car approached her.

The girl said the man opened the door as she was walking by and asked if she could help him with his phone, Coile said.

The child was scared, ran home and called her mother, who was at a nearby business. The mother immediately returned home and called the sheriff’s office about 3:35 p.m.

Coile said the child was unsure of the man’s race but said he had on a red shirt and a navy-blue ball cap with dark hair protruding from under the cap. He was described as being anywhere between his late teens and 30 years old.

Deputies spoke to several residents in the neighborhood and no one saw or heard anything.

Deputies had no description of the vehicle other than the color dark blue and that it had a trunk.
