Hospital work to close Gibson City intersection

GIBSON CITY — A major intersection will be closed for three weeks because of work at Gibson Area Hospital.

The closure at 19th and Melvin streets will affect a major through street and access to GCMS Middle School.

City council members approved the closure this week. The work involves moving water lines and installing new curbs and gutters.

After being granted a lot-line variance in April, hospital officials indicated the work would be done during the summer. City Superintendent Randy Stauffer said the delay is due to the hospital twice changing contractors but wanting to get the work done before winter.

Traffic will be rerouted via Lott Boulevard, 18th Street and Hager Drive.

In other action, the council approved an engineering contract for $39,400 with Farnsworth Group of Champaign to make plans and let bids for work next summer on Wood Street between Ninth and 13th streets.
