Urbana police seek teen in armed robbery

URBANA — Police are seeking a 15-year-old in connection with an armed robbery at an Urbana business on Tuesday afternoon.

Nobody was reported injured.

According to an Urbana police report, officers were called to Check ‘n Go, 1815 Philo Road, in response to a hold-up alarm going off, at 1:37 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the youth entered the store and moved to the counter after the clerk finished helping a customer. The robber then displayed a handgun and demanded money.

After the clerk opened the register drawer, the robber reached across and grabbed money.

The robber ran out of the store and around the north end of the building. He was last seen headed west toward an apartment complex in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, according to Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin.

After looking at a surveillance video from the business, police have identified the robber as a 15-year-old from Urbana. Police are not releasing his name because he is a juvenile, but they were still searching for him on Tuesday evening.

Anybody with information about the armed robbery is asked to call the Urbana Police Department at 384-2320 or remain anonymous by calling Champaign County Crimestoppers at 373-TIPS.
