UPDATED 8:40 p.m.

MAHOMET — A Danville man died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Kirk M. Melton, 51, of Danville was pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m. at the scene of the crash on Interstate 74 just east of exit 172 near Mahomet.

According to a state police report, Mr. Melton’s truck crashed at 2:16 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the westbound truck had been in the right lane and then moved to the right, traveled about 300 feet along the grassy shoulder and struck a tree. Mr. Melton was wearing his seat belt, police said.

Northrup said an autopsy will be performed Thursday in Urbana.

The crash is under investigation by the state police and the Champaign County coroner’s office.
