Reminder: Electronics recycling event set

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign County residents are again invited to dump their old electronics during a recycling collection on Saturday at The News-Gazette Distribution Center, 3202 Apollo Drive, C.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to noon. Access to the distribution center is at the intersection of North Market Street and East Olympian Drive, about a mile north of Market Place Mall. Residents should follow the signs to access the collection site via East Olympian Drive.

Most electronic items contain metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury that are harmful to the environment. Since Jan. 1, televisions, monitors and other electronic items have been banned from Illinois landfills.

Items that will be accepted include, but are not limited to, televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, printers, MP3 players, microwaves and mobile phones.

According to the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, certain functioning electronics items — such as newer model desktop or laptop computers — are sorted and selected to be refurbished and remarketed.

The majority of nonworking electronics waste is dismantled and separated into basic marketable commodities. At no point is the electronics waste sent to a landfill.

State law establishes stringent data-wiping standards for electronics. Software is used to overwrite the data, and data storage drives and devices are shredded.

More information on Saturday's recycling drive is available at the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission website at http://www.ccrpc.org or by calling 328-3313.
