'Walk as one' set for Tuesday in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN -- The Champaign Community Coalition and volunteers will "walk as one" in the Bristol Park neighborhood on Tuesday evening, and they are inviting more people to join them.

The group will go out into the neighborhood as teams and equipped with information about child safety and Halloween safety. The canvass will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Apostolic Faith Church, 110 Bellefontaine St., C.

The police department has been registering walkers and volunteers can still do so at champaignpolice.com, but pre-registration is not required.

Volunteers are asked to arrive at the church at 4:30 p.m. The walk is expected to last until 7 p.m.

It is the third in a series that has occurred throughout the city during the past year. The last walk was in June, and volunteers distributed information targeting the Garden Hills neighborhood. Walkers canvassed the Douglass Park neighborhood in May.

Organizers say the purpose is to share important crime prevention and safety information and to work with residents to address neighborhood concerns.
