Urbana man charged in cocaine case

URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly had cocaine for sale near a park in Urbana is due back in court in December.

Tyran Jackson, 35, who listed an address in the 1600 block of East Florida Avenue, was charged Thursday with the Class X felony of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance alleging that he had about 2 1/2 grams of cocaine for sale in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in Urbana on Wednesday.

Assistant State's Attorney Duke Harris said Urbana police saw Jackson near Crestwood Park engaged in what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction. He dropped a bag that contained several smaller bags containing cocaine.

Judge Chase Leonhard agreed to appoint the public defender to represent Jackson, who was told to be back in court Dec. 11. If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from six to 30 years in prison.

Leonhard set Jackson's bond at $50,000.
