Coat drive set for Westville

WESTVILLE — Santas Anonymous will hold a winter coat drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 27.

People can drop off new or gently used coats, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens and boots for people of all ages at the parking lot of NewWave Communications, 1209 N. State St., Westville. Organizers ask that all used items be clean and in good condition.

This is the 36th year Santas Anonymous has held the coat drive, and each year the need for warm winter clothing grows, said Shari Toth, one of the organizers.

"When you see the kids coming to school without a winter coat or hat or gloves on, it's heartbreaking," she said. "Many of them are waiting out in the cold for buses without the proper clothing."

Last year, the organization distributed 280 coats and other items for free to needy people, mainly children. This year, it hopes to collect 280 or more items.

The items will be distributed at no cost to residents in the Westville school district from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 2 at Trinity United Church of Christ fellowship hall, 311 Moses Ave., Westville.

Santas Anonymous also plans to hold its annual toy drive around Thanksgiving. The organization collects new or gently-used toys and wraps them. Then Santa Claus delivers the gifts to area children.
