Man charged with holdup attempt

CHAMPAIGN — A 24-year-old Champaign man was arrested Monday night within minutes of an attempted holdup at a west Champaign business.

Champaign police Sgt. Dennis Baltzell said around 9 p.m. Monday, a man entered the Big Lots at 2002 W. Springfield Ave. while armed with a knife and demanded the money from one of the cash registers.

Baltzell said that when the male clerk indicated to the would-be robber that he was unable to open the register, the man ran from the store. Store employees immediately called 911 and police found Lyle Gallez, 24, at the corner of Country Fair Drive and Springfield Avenue.

"He admitted to doing the robbery," said Baltzell, who added that Gallez had a knife on him but it may not have been the one that was displayed to the clerk.

Gallez was charged Tuesday with attempted armed robbery. If convicted of the Class X felony, he faces six to 30 years in prison.
