15-year-old charged as adult in sex case

URBANA — A 15-year-old Urbana teen was originally charged as an adult with two sex crimes for allegedly forcing girls to perform sex acts on him Monday night.

Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis said because one of the victims is under the age of 13, that meant an automatic transfer to adult court for the teen, who listed an address in the 100 block of Grossback Drive.

The teen was charged Wednesday with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, against a 12-year-old girl, and a second count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, against a 13-year-old girl.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said the girls were walking home from the library about 6 p.m. Monday when the teen confronted them and directed them into the foyer of an apartment building in the 400 block of East Green Street.

He allegedly threatened to hurt them if they did not perform a sex act on him. Each of them complied, Morgan said.

The girls then went home where one of them told her mother what had happened and the mother called police.

Morgan said the girls are in middle school and the teen is a high school student but the girls know who he is.

He was arrested Tuesday at the high school.

If convicted of the Class X felony, he could receive a prison term of six to 30 years.

Editor's note: The accused originally was charged as an adult. A plea agreement reached in February 2013 was expected to result in his being sentenced as a juvenile. The News-Gazette normally does not identify juveniles.
