Man hospitalized following rollover accident in Champaign
CHAMPAIGN— One man was hospitalized following his reported involvement in two different accidents Wednesday afternoon in Champaign.
According to a police report, officers were called to a hit-and-run accident involving two vehicles in the 0-100 block of East Main Street at 3:32 p.m. No injuries were reported in connection with that crash, according to Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn.
Police said the driver of one of the vehicles, Steve Newsome, 54, of Urbana, fled the scene of the accident before police found him near Walnut and Washington streets.
While officers were in the process of giving Newsome a ticket for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, Newsome fled from police.
Then police were called to the 400 block of East Eureka Street at 4 p.m., where Newsome was injured in a single-car rollover accident.
Witnesses told police they saw the car head down North Fourth Street before the car lost control, hit a power pole and rolled over, with Newsome trapped underneath the vehicle.
Several members of the public helped several police officers lift the vehicle off of Newsome so he could be pulled from the wreckage.
Some of the volunteers, including the police officers, received minor injuries during the extrication, but Dunn said they did not require medical attention.
Newsome was ticketed for driving under the influence of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding a peace officer.
He was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was listed in stable condition on Wednesday night.
