Stiletto Sprint raised $3,800 to help teachers with supplies

CHAMPAIGN — The Junior League of Champaign-Urbana hosted its first Stiletto Sprint Oct. 13 in downtown Champaign, and almost 50 people sprinted down Neil Street in high heels.

The event raised $3,800 for the Junior League Locker, the league's teacher supply store that provides free supplies to teachers in the Champaign and Urbana school districts. The supplies vary from typical school supplies, such as pens, pencils, composition books and crayons, to more unconventional supplies, such as copy paper, tote bags and toys for classroom treasure chests.

Teachers are invited to shop once per quarter.

The overall winner of the Stiletto Sprint was Jessica Young, a new member of the Junior League. Participants, including Champaign Mayor Don Gerard, wore a wide variety of stilettos and high heels.

Junior League members say they expect it to become a yearly event.
