Westville school board OKs volleyball program

WESTVILLE — School board members have approved instituting a parent-run volleyball program at Judith Giacoma Elementary School this winter.

Heather Eller and Trish Ceader said they want to help teach girls in the fifth and sixth grades the basics of volleyball. Eller and Ceader said they already have about two dozen girls interested in the program.

They hope to have a single team consisting of both fifth- and sixth-grade girls who would practice starting in December and play a half-dozen games in January.

The district will not provide any funding for the program, although the team hopes to use the school gymnasium around the other activities scheduled there.

In other business, Mike Acord was sworn in as a new member of the school board.

Acord is filling the seat vacated by board President Janet Ragle last month when she resigned because she is moving out of the district.

Acord, a lifelong Westville resident, is the maintenance supervisor of the Hispanic Housing Development Corp., which includes the Vermilion Gardens complex in Danville. Acord's term will be up for election in April 2013.
