Clinton residents arrested on felony drug charges

CLINTON— Two Clinton residents are in the DeWitt County Jail after they were arrested Wednesday on felony drug charges.

John D. Smith, 54, and Mary F. Smith, 52, both of Clinton, were arrested by Illinois State Police Task Force 6 for criminal drug conspiracy, unlawful possession of a controlled substance between 15 and 100 grams, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver between 15 grams and 100 grams, and money laundering.

According to a release from state police, some of the charges allege that the transactions took place less than 1,000 feet from Webster Elementary School in Clinton, which makes them more serious felonies.

Police have declined to say what kind or the amount of drugs that the couple allegedly had. They are being held in lieu of $750,000 bond each.

Task Force 6 is a multi-agency enforcement unit that specializes in the enforcement of narcotics laws. Unit members include officers from the DeWitt and McLean County sheriff's offices, the Illinois State Police, and the Clinton and Illinois State University police departments.
