Saybrook woman dies from house explosion

SAYBROOK — An explosion at a home in Saybrook Saturday afternoon has claimed the life of a woman.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said Charlene Durham, 60, was pronounced dead at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington at 4:43 p.m. as a result of an explosion at her home at 115 S. Monroe Street in Saybrook about 12:45 p.m.

Sgt. Don Gamble of the McLean County Sheriff’s Department said there was an apparent gas leak in the single-family residence although firefighters from Saybrook and several other area departments are still investigating the cause of the explosion.

Gamble said it appeared the house was leveled.

A release from Kimmerling said two others in the home were also taken to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center but their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Gamble said a preliminary report said the others present were girls, ages 18 and 15, who listed different addresses than Ms. Durham. He declined to release their names.

Firefighters from Colfax, Normal, Bellflower, Gibson City, Arrowsmith and Ellsworth helped the Saybrook fire department, Gamble said.

An autopsy will be done on Ms. Durham.
