21-year-old charged with sex crime
Editor's note: This charge was dismissed in February 2013. Here's the story about the dismissal.
URBANA — An Urbana man who was allegedly having an ongoing sexual relationship with a teenage girl has been charged with a sex crime.
Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said Solomon Hawkins, 21, who listed an address in the 1600 block of East Florida Avenue, was arrested Thursday night for allegedly driving while his license was suspended. Police stopped his car because it matched the description of one called in to police as having been involved in a crime in southeast Urbana.
Seraphin said the car didn't stop immediately for police but when it did, the officer found Hawkins driving and learned his license was suspended. He was arrested for that and police found other females in the car.
Seraphin said police talked to one of the girls who is 16, and learned that she and Hawkins have been involved in a sexual relationship for more than a year.
Under the law, the girl is not old enough to consent to a sexual relationship.
The state's attorney's office charged Hawkins with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a felony carrying penalties upon conviction ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
He's due back in court Nov. 27 with an attorney.
