Homeless man charged with burglary

URBANA — A homeless man who was seen entering cars in Champaign Thursday morning has been charged with burglary.

The Champaign County state's attorney's office filed two counts of burglary against Jamie Lee Johnson, 39, for allegedly getting into vehicles without the permission of owners on Thursday.

Champaign police Sgt. Dave Griffet said about 8:10 a.m. Thursday, an employee of an apartment complex in the 500 block of South Mattis Avenue saw a man he did not believe to be a tenant looking in the windows of cars in a parking lot. After that man got in a car, he was confronted and left.

Griffet said the witness then called police and an officer found Johnson within a block.

The witness identified Johnson as the man he saw in the cars and he was arrested. A search of his backpack turned up electronic items that Griffet said did not belong to Johnson.

Griffet said Johnson showed officers other vehicles he had entered in the 100 block of West Church Street and the 1100 block of West Washington Street.
