16 potential candidates have picked up petitions for Danville council

DANVILLE — On Monday, candidates for the Danville City Council will begin filing paperwork to get their names on the ballot for one of the seven aldermanic seats up for election next spring.

The group of 16 who have picked up nominating petitions includes six of the seven aldermen whose seats are up for election — Rickey Williams Jr. in Ward 1, Bill Gilbert in Ward 3, Sharon McMahon in Ward 4, Mike Puhr in Ward 5, Steve Nichols in Ward 6 and Steve Foster in Ward 7. Current Alderman Lois Cooper, Ward 2, decided not to seek re-election.

The seven aldermen whose seats won't be up for election in 2013 are Kevin Davis, Ward 1; Rick Strebing, Ward 2; April Gilbert, Ward 3; Mike O'Kane, Ward 4; Tom Stone, Ward 5; Jon Cooper, Ward 6; and Bill Black, Ward 7. Their seats will be up again in 2015.

Although 16 have picked up nominating petitions in the last few months, it doesn't mean they definitely will file those petitions with the Danville Election Commission next week to officially run for office. The filing period runs from Monday through Nov. 26.

In addition to the six incumbents, 10 others have also picked up nominating petitions in the seven wards.

Ward 1: Incumbent Williams, plus Kenneth Lillard.

Ward 2: Incumbent Gilbert, plus Darrell Heath, Jean Davis and Frank Hoskins.

Ward 3: Theodore Caudill, Roosevelt Davis and Jonah Stitt.

Ward 5: Incumbent Puhr, plus Janice Ostiguy.

Ward 6: Incumbent Nichols, plus David Crawley.

Ward 7: Incumbent Foster, plus Al Reynolds.
