Driver ticketed in four-vehicle crash in fog in Coles County

MATTOON — One driver was ticketed and three people suffered minor injuries Wednesday in a collision involving four vehicles, including a state police squad car, in the fog in Coles County.

The crash happened at Illinois 16 and Coles County Road 1050E, the road that leads to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, at 7:23 a.m.

Three westbound vehicles were stopped for a traffic light at the intersection when, a state police report says, Alisha N. Terrell, 29, of Mattoon was driving west on Illinois 16 and distracted by a phone call in heavy fog. Her car hit an SUV driven by Jing Zhang, 18, of Charleston, which was pushed into a car driven by Linda M. Burns, 53, of Kansas, Ill., which was pushed into a Ford Crown Victoria squad car driven by state trooper Kevin L. Kersey, 50, of Ashmore.

Terrell, Zhang and Burns were treated and released at Sarah Bush Lincoln, state police said. Kersey, who was on duty, was not injured. His squad car did not require towing.

Terrell was ticketed for having no valid driver's license and for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

All four drivers were wearing seat belts.
