Rantoul man faces burglary charge

URBANA — A Rantoul man who allegedly stole items from a car on the University of Illinois campus has been charged with burglary.

A Champaign police report said an officer saw Michael Mackey, 41, who listed an address in the 400 block of East Grove Street, Rantoul, in a car in the 300 block of East Daniel Street about 3 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 22.

A report said the officer saw Mackey putting a laptop computer, a mini-laptop computer and another electronic device in a backpack.

Mackey posted bond and was released from jail. He's due back in court on the felony charge Dec. 11.

Because of the high incidence of car burglaries in that area of campus, Champaign police have stepped up their patrols.

You'd think that, with all of the vehicle burglaries on campus lately, that students on campus would know better than to leave laptops worth hundreds of dollars in their cars.  Hell, even if there hadn't been a vehicle burglarized on campus all semester, leaving your computer in the car is still incredibly stupid.  I wonder if this vehicle was even locked!

It's amazing how so many of those kids are smart enough to get into a presitigious university, yet have zero common sense.
