Two charged in campus robbery

CHAMPAIGN — Two college students were arrested early Tuesday for allegedly robbing a man of cash on campus Monday night.

University of Illinois Police Sgt. Tom Geis said about 8 p.m., an 18-year-old Urbana man contacted UI police saying he'd been robbed about an hour earlier at the corner of First and John streets by an acquaintance. After taking the cash, the victim followed the robber, who then reportedly lifted his shirt tail and revealed what the victim thought was a switchblade. The victim then retreated.

Geis said the victim identified his attacker, whose full name he did not know, through photos that police had. Police developed enough information to obtain a search warrant for that man's apartment in the 100 block of East Green Street in Champaign.

Early Tuesday morning, they served the warrant and found drug paraphernalia and a .22-caliber revolver with ammunition.

Geis said the owner of those items, Taaj K. Martin, 20, a Parkland College student, allegedly told police that he robbed his acquaintance because he needed money to repay a debt. He said the item in his waistband was not a knife but a toy comb.

Police also arrested Luis C. Davalos, 18, a UI student who listed an address on College Court in Urbana.

Geis said Davalos was the one who allegedly set up the meeting between Martin and the victim, was nearby when it happened, and was back at Martin's apartment afterward.

Both men were charged Tuesday with aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison upon conviction.
