Man arrested on drug charge

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly had heroin at Parkland College has been criminally charged.

Charles E. Nickerson, 31, who listed an address in the 1000 block of West Beardsley Avenue, was arrested at the community college, where he is a student, on Tuesday.

Parkland Police Sgt. Yvonne Meyer said Champaign police had informed her department that Nickerson was wanted on outstanding warrants for city ordinance violations. After his arrest on those, Nickerson was searched and officers found suspected heroin and over $500 cash on him.

Nickerson was charged Wednesday with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Because it happened on the grounds of a school, it becomes a Class X felony. If convicted, he faces six to 30 years in prison.
