Two charged with home invasion
URBANA — Champaign County sheriff's deputies arrested two men early Friday morning in connection with an attempted home invasion just outside the Champaign city limits.
George Harvey Ortiz, 29, who listed an address in the 400 block of Briar Lane, Champaign, and Melvin Lee Johnson, 19, who listed an address in the 1100 block of Lierman Avenue, Urbana, both pleaded innocent on Friday to felony home invasion armed with a firearm.
According to a sheriff's report, deputies were called to a reported fight in progress outside a home in the 1600 block of Queens Way at 12:45 a.m. Friday.
Police said Johnson had a dating relationship with an 18-year-old woman who lived at that address.
Armed with a handgun, the two men attempted to force their way into the woman's home but were unsuccessful, police said. Witnesses told deputies that both Ortiz and Johnson handled the gun at different times.
A fight and shouting ensued, leading witnesses to call 911, though it was unclear who may have been fighting with whom.
Both men had left the scene by the time sheriff's deputies arrived, but the deputies received information that they could be found in the 400 block of Briar Lane. Deputies arrested them there.
Judge Richard Klaus set Ortiz' bond at $150,000 and Johnson's bond at $75,000. As a condition of the bonds, both men were ordered to have no contact with the 18-year-old woman or her home.
Both men are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19.
