Urbana mobile home fire claims lives of two dogs

Updated at 3:50 p.m.

A fire official said the cause of a blaze that claimed the lives of two dogs Friday in northeast Urbana will remain undetermined.

Edge Scott Fire Chief Dan Smith said firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames when they arrived at a mobile home at 26 Toni Lane shortly before 1 p.m.

Crews were able to keep the fire contained to the kitchen where it started and had the blaze under control in 3 1/2 minutes. A cat escaped the trailer, but two dogs died at the scene. No one else was home at the time of the fire.

Smith said crews attacked the fire the same as any other.

Smith said there's no word yet on a damage estimate for the fire. He said there was heavy smoke damage throughout the trailer.

Several other fire departments assisted Edge Scott, including Savoy, Urbana, Carroll, Eastern Prairie and St. Joseph. The Champaign County sheriff's office responded, as well.
