Man charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
URBANA— A homeless man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond following an incident in which multiple shots were reportedly fired in Champaign.
Rynell W. Frazier, 24, who listed his address as homeless, pleaded innocent on Monday to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Judge Richard Klaus set Frazier's next court appearance for Jan. 22.
According to a police report, Champaign police officers heard multiple shots fired in the area of West Green Street and South Prospect Avenue at 3:16 a.m. Sunday.
The report says the officers saw Frazier in the 500 block of Highland Street hurrying away from the area.
When the officers tried to make contact with Frazier, police said, Frazier ran west into a nearby yard. Police then chased Frazier as he scaled a fence before an officer arrested him in the 500 block of Willis Street.
When police searched Frazier, they found 0.155 ounce (4.4 grams) of suspected marijuana, according to the report.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said that police also recovered a gun in the driveway of a nearby home.
Dunn said both Frazier and the police officer who chased him received minor injuries. Frazier was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was treated and released. He was later taken to the county jail.
Information was not available on the condition of the injured police officer.
