GEO members ratify five-year contract

CHAMPAIGN — The Graduate Employees' Organization has overwhelmingly ratified a new five-year contract with the University of Illinois.

The new contract guarantees UI teaching and graduate assistants will receive 2.5 percent raises for the first year and protects tuition waivers for the life of the contract.

"We're very pleased it's been wrapped up. Tuition waivers were our members' most important issue. This guarantees they will be protected for the next five years," said GEO spokeswoman Stephanie Seawell.

The results of the vote were announced Friday afternoon. The contract was approved by over 95 percent, Seawell said, declining to release details on how many graduate employees voted.

The union represents over 4,200 graduate employees on the Urbana campus.

Here is Thursday's story with details of the contract. And here is the contract itself.
