Two accidents delay traffic on interstates 57 and 74

CHAMPAIGN — At least two accidents had traffic backed up on interstate highways Sunday evening as fog and rain blanketed the area.

Around 6 p.m. on Sunday, a pickup truck hit a light pole near the Interstate 57 interchange with Interstate 74, said Champaign fire Capt. Dave Ferber. The truck went into a ditch and caught fire.

Champaign firefighters blocked a lane of traffic as they extinguished the fire. Ferber said the driver was able to get himself out of the vehicle, but there was no information available on whether the driver was seriously injured or if there were passengers in the vehicle.

Later on Sunday evening, a sport-utility vehicle hit a guardrail on Interstate 74 near its interchange with Interstate 57. One lane of traffic was blocked until the accident was clear. There was no information immediately available on how many people were involved or whether anyone was hurt.
