Champaign hires three new principals

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school board has hired new principals for Franklin Middle School, Jefferson Middle School and the Novak Academy, the school district's alternative high school.

The board unanimously approved the hires at its Monday meeting.

Sara Sanders will be the principal of Franklin Middle School, Angelica Franklin will be the new principal at Jefferson Middle School and Rachel Maehr, the principal of the Novak Academy.

The principals will begin their new jobs July 1 of next year, although Maehr has been serving as interim principal at the Novak Academy since the beginning of the school year.

Sanders is currently the interim associate principal at Franklin Middle School, and Franklin is assistant principal at Bottenfield Elementary.

The school board also approved its final tax levy Monday. The school district will ask for $78.9 million and will also receive about $690,000 in property tax money to pay on $14.5 million in working cash bonds it issued last year. Last year, the school district asked for about $76.3 million but actually received about $75.3 million.

The board also voted to abate about $6 million property taxes that would have been spent on construction debt. Instead, the school board will use money from the school facilities sales tax to pay on that debt.
