Man dead while Danville police investigate possible shooting

DANVILLE – Police are looking for information about the death of a 19-year-old Danville man who was found lying on the street on Sunday evening.

Police are investigating the man's death as a homicide, Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said this morning.

Police were called to the area of Lape and Fairweight streets at about 5:30 p.m. Thomason said a man walking the area heard what he described as someone groaning and discovered the individual.

Police and Medix personnel were not sure of the cause of injury, but they said the man may have been shot.

The victim was transported to Presence Hospital in Danville and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson said an autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon. She will release the man's name after his family has been notified.

No one is in custody at this time, and Danville police are asking for anyone with information about this incident to contact them at 217-431-2250 or Crimestoppers at 217-446-TIPS (8477).
