Police link man to gas station robbery
UPDATED 4:50 p.m. Thursday
CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man was charged Thursday for a gas station holdup that occurred almost three months ago.
Champaign police Sgt. Dennis Baltzell said Markell Prather, 30, who listed an address in the 600 block of Mitchell Court, Champaign, was arrested Wednesday after Detective Pat Funkhouser was able to link him to the armed robbery of the HP Sprinter store, 2401 W. Springfield Ave., C, on Sept. 27.
About 9:10 p.m. that day a man entered the station armed with a silver handgun and demanded money from the male clerk. The clerk handed over money and the man left, Baltzell said.
Police had the clerk's description of the robber and surveillance video to work from. They believed Prather was the man on the video but police were unable to develop enough information to charge him, Baltzell said.
After Prather's recent arrest for an unrelated crime, police developed additional information to link him to the gas station robbery, Baltzell said.
On Thursday he was charged with armed robbery.
Neither the gun nor the money from the gas station holdup has been recovered, he said.
Prather’s bond was set at $175,000. His next court appearance was set for Dec. 27.
