Police seek woman who took purse

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police are asking for the public's help in identifying a woman who took a purse that didn't belong to her.

Officer Mike Swaney said that about 10:30 a.m. Dec. 5, a 53-year-old Champaign woman was at a Mass Transit District bus shelter at the Country Fair Shopping Center behind Taco Bell on Springfield Avenue when she got on a bus, inadvertently leaving her purse behind.

Swaney said the woman had cash in it which she was saving to pay for a child's birthday party.

The purse was found later that night in a U.S. mailbox near Huntington Towers at the corner of Springfield Avenue and Randolph Street. Nothing but the cash was missing from it.

Swaney was able to obtain surveillance video from an MTD bus that showed a light-skinned black woman in her mid-30s, about 5 feet 7 inches, weighing 125 pounds, with the purse. She was also carrying a shopping bag and a drink cup, he said.

Anyone with information on her identity is asked to call Champaign police at 351-4545 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.
