Man charged with criminal sexual assault
URBANA — A Chicago man accused of sexually molesting a teen-age girl in Champaign is being held in the Champaign County jail on $750,000 bond.
Desmond Wade, 41, was charged in a warrant issued Nov. 30 with six counts of criminal sexual assault.
The charges allege various sex acts with one girl who was in his care in Champaign between July and November 2012.
Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said Wade was friends with the girl's mother, and that he cared for the girl and her brother while the mother was away. On Nov. 8, the mother returned home and found Wade allegedly engaged in a sex act with her daughter.
Interviews with the child by professionals revealed other contacts that led to the criminal charges.
Although the charges are Class 1 felonies, Wade faces sentencing as a Class X felon of up to six to 30 years on each count, to be served one after the other if he's convicted. The harsher penalties are because of his prior criminal convictions, three of which are drug-related.
Assistant Public Defender Jamie Propps asked Judge Richard Klaus to consider a lower bond for Wade, who she said has 14 children, lives with a sister in Chicago and has serious health problems.
Klaus declined to lower the bond from the $750,000 previously set.
Wade is due back in court Jan. 29.
