Champaign vigil for Connecticut victims planned

CHAMPAIGN — Leaders from a handful of churches and representatives from Champaign schools plan to hold a service Sunday night at Jericho Missionary Baptist Church to mourn Friday’s shooting at a Connecticut school.

While the shooting that left 20 children, six adults and the shooter dead happened in another part of the country, Jericho Pastor Lekevie Johnson said it still strikes close to home.

“We’re going to pull together the churches in the community as well as community leaders to pull together and just pray for not only the safety of our community but to pray also for the tragedy that has struck Newtown, Conn., and those families during this tough time,” Johnson said.

The service starts at 7 p.m. and will be held in the parking lot of Jericho Missionary Baptist Church, 1601 W. Bloomington Rd., C. Anyone is welcome.
