Woman arrested for having another's purse
CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign woman who saw her picture in the newspaper Friday holding another woman’s purse on a bus was given a free ride to the county jail Friday night.
Champaign police Sgt. Dave Griffet said Danika L. Keys, 22, who listed an address in the 500 block of South Lynn Street, was arrested Friday evening for theft of lost or mislaid property.
On Thursday, Officer Mike Swaney asked The News-Gazette to publish a photo he obtained from a Mass Transit District surveillance camera of a woman carrying a purse that another woman had inadvertently left behind at a bus shelter at the Country Fair Shopping Center on West Springfield Avenue on Dec. 5.
Swaney said the purse was later found in a U.S. mailbox on North Randolph Street near Springfield but it was missing the cash that its owner had been saving for a child’s birthday party.
Griffet said Keys contacted police Friday and identified herself as the woman in the photo. She told police that she had found the purse and knew she should have given it to the bus driver but did not. She denied taking any money from it.
Keys is expected to be formally charged Monday.
