Champaign police investigate armed robbery

CHAMPAIGN — Police are investigating an armed robbery earlier this week on Champaign's south side.

According to a police report, a 32-year-old Champaign woman said she was walking east on a walk/bike path near the 1800 block of Fox Drive at 8:38 a.m. Monday when she was hit on the head by a man.

The man grabbed the woman from behind, displayed a gun and asked her if she had any money.

The robber then went through the woman's purse, took cash from it, forced the woman to the ground and touched her inappropriately, police said.

When the victim tried to resist the man by grabbing the robber's gun, he hit her several times and then ran away.

While the woman did not need medical treatment at the scene, she was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for a medical examination.

A description of the man, who was wearing all black clothing, was incomplete.
