URBANA — Three area teens who were found last week in a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Champaign have been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
Trenton Jones, 18, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Stratford Drive, Champaign; Dehari Banks, 18, who listed an address in the 900 block of North Division Street, Urbana; and Clarence Faust, 18, who listed an address in the 200 block of Briar Lane, Champaign; were arrested by Urbana police in connection with a 2002 Ford Explorer in which they were found.
An Urbana police report said that the owner, a Champaign man, had parked his vehicle outside a west Champaign business about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13. When he came out, it was gone and he notified police.
Later that day, an Urbana officer spotted the stolen SUV and stopped it.
Banks was driving and said that Jones had come to his house in the vehicle, saying it belonged to his (Jones’) girlfriend. Banks volunteered to drive, the report said.
Faust was in the front seat and denied knowing that the SUV was stolen. He said Jones had picked him up in the vehicle earlier and said it belonged to his girlfriend.
Jones, who was in the rear passenger side seat, told police an unknown woman picked him up in the SUV about 6 p.m. but he was unable to give police any information about her.
Faust is due back in court with his own attorney Jan. 8. Jones and Banks are due back in court Feb. 12. If convicted of the Class 2 felony, they face penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
